Oh Poutine: Not French Fries, eh?

After attending the 2016 Philippine International Motor Show held at the World Trade Center last Sunday, our stomach growled and yearned for some good chow. Since we couldn't agree on which food cart to choose in the event, Mr. C suggested that we head to the Petron Gas station at Macapagal to try Oh Poutine.

Their self-service counter.

I had zero knowledge what poutine was before dining here. So to my dismay of discovering that they're basically french fries upon the sight of those boxes, I looked at Mr. C with a disapproving face, "French fries lang siya?"

Why try Poutine, then? What's the difference? Well, what you'll get is the quality over the normal french fries you get from fast food chains. It's served fresh from the pan, has an irresistible texture that is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They have various gravy flavors for you to enjoy.

IT'S CHOWTIME!

Mr. C chose the most basic flavors: Classic Cheese Curd and Truffle Gravy.

CLASSIC CHEESE CURD (PHP 99)

It has their savory gravy with bits of cheese curd. Since it's just cheese curd, do not expect a cheesy taste.

TRUFFLE GRAVY (PHP 99)

Earthy, as Mr. C cited. Gives you a smack of truffle oil in every bite.

Good thing to include sandwiches in their menu because having poutine only would leave you feeling jaded. We tried the following sandwiches:

MONTREAL ROAST CHICKEN (PHP 69)

The filling consists of grilled chicken mixed with coleslaw, which goes well together.

PHILLY CHEESE TEAK (PHP 89)

This is my favorite! I understood why it's the priciest among all the other sandwiches. The sandwich-filling ratio is not a problem because the filling is so tasty. What can I say, all my favorite herbs are there in that sandwich.

T-REX (PHP 69)

Mr. C was still bitin so he wished for Trex. He was gotten by its meaty combination of bacon, sausage, and spam. Well, it was worth it. It's buttery with all the delicious meat combined.

This side of the diner made me think, "I have to try their winter doughnuts!" so I approached the cashier again and chose which doughnut to buy.

SMORES WINTER DOUGHNUT (PHP 89)

Mr. C was suggesting to get the most basic flavor but I insisted that I get a special one. I've had enough matcha for that week so I opted for Smores.
For their winter doughnuts, note that you're paying for the dough. It tastes fresh and the dough is crispy sweet. The flavor did not really impact that much.

WHAT WE LIKED:
  • The chewiness of the poutine paired with the crunchy texture!
  • Their sandwiches are a wonderful bonus!
  • The winter doughnuts are freshly-baked for you!
WHAT WE DIDN'T LIKE:
  • Their food loses its bragging quality over time, so make sure that you always choose to dine in.
  • We were unable to finish our second box of poutine. Mej nakakaumay.
  • Winter doughnuts took a while before it got served (because it's freshly-baked, ya know) but the crew could have given a heads-up.
WANNA-CHOW-AGAIN METER
Oh Poutine is good for a quick merienda but it doesn't give you that impression of wanting to go back. You will eventually get fed up eating poutine as you go nearer in finishing a box. For the winter doughnut, you're paying for the dough. Their sandwiches are the redeeming factor. All in all, there's nothing in Oh Poutine that makes us want to go back. We are only voting "Never Again" for this one.
